Avodart mechanism of action
The main component in Avodart - Dutasteride makes impossible the transformation of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The androgen DHT answers for the growth and following magnification of the prostate gland. The process of testosterone transformation to DHT is induced by the enzyme 5 alpha-reductase, having 2 isoforms, type 1 and type 2. The type 2 isoenzyme is mainly found in the reproductive tissues, the type 1 isoenzyme ensures testosterone conversion in the skin and liver. Dutasteride represents specific inhibitory properties of both types 5 alpha-reductase isoenzymes. The medication does not bind to androgen receptors and does not produce any androgenic effects. The effect of Avodart on the reduction of DHT is dose dependent. The therapeutic effect of the daily doses of this medication is noted within 1 to 2 weeks. According to clinical studies of the medication, Avodart 5 mg dose per day used during 12 weeks significantly lowered DHT in comparison to placebo.
